Question 304 - Difference between ¡®raise¡¯ and ¡®increase¡¯
Dear Graham
What is the difference between a 3% raise & a 3 % increase? I've seen it in a MC question?
From
YP
Dear YP

Both these words are used as nouns and mean that your pay has gone up by 3%.

Both words can be used but ¡®raise¡¯ is more common. ¡®Increase¡¯ is often used as a verb.

e.g. We will only get a 2% wage increase this year.

¡®Raise¡¯ is American English. We use ¡®rise¡¯ in British English.

e.g. I got a 3% rise from my boss!

You can see more uses of raise and increase at the Merriam-Webster website.

Best wishes
Graham
