Question 303 - Difference between ¡®evaluation¡¯ and ¡®assessment¡¯
Dear Graham

Would you let me know the difference between "Evaluation" and "Assessment"?

Thanks a lot.

From,
Fong
Dear Fong

I¡¯m guessing that you are talking about school. Both words are related to grading students for their work.

Assessment is done from students¡¯ work. Students produce work and teachers give them a grade.

e.g. I will give the students a grammar assessment next week. I hope they revise!

Evaluation can be based on what the teacher thinks of a student. Maybe there is no work to look at. It is just the teacher¡¯s feeling.

e.g. The NET teacher gives every student an evaluation of their oral English at the end of term. She told them how to improve.

Words ending in ¡®tion¡¯ and ¡®ment¡¯ are usually nouns. The verb forms are ¡®assess¡¯ and ¡®evaluate¡¯.

Best wishes
Graham
