Weekly focus - The Police

There is a policeman in this week's episode. In America, police are often called cops.

We often see American cops in films and TV programmes. The most popular programme in America now is call CSI - Crime Scene Investigation. It is on ATV World on Sunday night and Cable TV (Channel 20 - AXN) on Monday nights. On the website, you can try to solve two crimes. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/csi/main.shtml

The most famous police organisation is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Their website has information about its history and "Most Wanted Criminals". In the "For The Family" section, you can learn about "Internet Scams". These are ways that people are cheated for money online. http://www.fbi.gov/homepage.htm

There are about 800,000 police officers in the USA. About 900,000 people were convicted of a crime in 2003! The USA spent more than HK$500 billion on policing in 2003. You can find out more statistics here. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/

Here is the Hong Kong Police's English website. You can find out how to become a policeman or policewoman. http://www.info.gov.hk/police/aa-home/english/home-e.htm
