Teen Life In America - Hanging out

After school, American teenagers, often "hang out". This means that they spend time with friends. They may go shopping, play a sport or go to a cafe for a drink and snack.

The most popular places to "hang out" are coffee shops (like Lana's "The Talon"), fast food restaurants (like McDonald's and Hardee's) or diners.

Diners
A diner is like an American "cha chan teng" (茶餐厅). It serves home-cooked food and snacks. You can usually buy breakfast all day.

People sit on stools at the bar or in booths.

When you buy coffee, the waitress will keep refilling your cup.

There is often a "duke box". You can pay to listen to a song of your choice.

Diners are in many movies, such as "Grease" and "Back to the Future".
