The Directions of a Ship
When we are aboard a ship, we should first know how to tell
directions on a ship. They have special names. The front is
called the "bow" and the back is called the "stern".
The left and right sides are called the "port side"
and "starboard side" respectively.
Sails
On the ship Huan, there are three masts and each has a sail.
The main mast is 20 meters high and the sail weighs one ton.
It takes at least 40 children to pull up the main sail.
Ladders
There are two rope ladders on the two sides of the Huan. After
swimming, children can climb up the rope ladders to get back
onto the ship.
Bow
At the bow, there is an anchor which is used to moor the ship
to the seabed. As it is very heavy, children help to put down
and pull up the anchor.
Water
Supply
The water supply comes from a water tank and is pumped into
a large water bucket on the main deck. Children use it to
wash themselves after swimming, wash dishes and also to clean
the deck.
Activities
on the main deck
Most of the activities take place on the main deck
of the ship Huan. There are command tasks like climbing over
the sail and trapeze (hold on to a bar, swing out and jump
into the sea). Children also have their meals on the main
deck and even sleep there when the weather is good.
