Before watching, tell students,
"Naz thinks her boyfriend, John, dresses like a 'dork'. Find out how Gal Pal helps him look cool. How would you help John if you were Gal Pal?"

Some students may have seen the film already. Don't worry because they wouldn't have tried the following activities.
While-viewing tasks
Time Activities Notes
4 min

Let students enjoy the whole film without stopping.

Post-viewing tasks
Time Activities Notes
2 min
Ask "Did you agree with Gal Pal's advice? Did John look better? Could have class vote on whether the new John looks better or worse.
  Giving Advice (9 min)
1 min

1. Ask students to look at the printout of the Target Language.

2 min 2. Explain that all these phrases can be used to give advice. Explain the differences between 1-2, 5-6 and 1&2.

All phrases are followed by verbs. No. 1 is followed by the 'ing' form of a verb.

6 min 3. Ask two students to the front of the class. The others must give them advice on certain situations. They must use one of the phrases from the printout. e.g.
(i) Keith woke up late. He might be late for school. (e.g. Why don't you get a taxi?)
(ii) Susie hasn't finished her homework.
(iii) Keith wants to race motorcycles as a career.
(iv) Susie wants Keith to do her homework.
(v) Keith wants to join the school basketball team.
(vi) Susie's parents want her to study in Canada . She doesn't want to go.

Students could think of more situations if there is time.
Students act out the dialogue (22 min)
5 min

1. Watch the film again without stopping.

5 min 2. Put students into groups of four. Give out the dialogue. Each person should choose a role (Naz, John, Gal Pal, David) and say the dialogue. Give time to prepare. Students can turn around to go into groups. Students in odd numbered groups can play two parts.
8 min 3. Students can swap roles so they say the dialogue two to three times, depending on time. They could swap roles after every scene.
4 min 4. Choose four students to act out the film in front of the class. They don't need to be from the same group.
Students act out the dialogue (22 min)
15 min 1. Students stay in their groups. They must write & act out two extra scenes:
‘John wants to see Naz again. He asks Gal Pal for help. He must phone Naz and talks to her father.’
The scenes should last no more than one minute each.
They should include advice phrases.
Students must think of what each character will say. (Naz, John, Gal Pal, Naz’s father) Smaller groups could omit the father character.
15 min 2. Ask groups to perform one of their scenes. Start with a strong group. Encourage students to perform without notes.
