4. What colour of school bag would suit your uniform?

5. Which film star often plays a dork?
(e.g. – Jim Carrey, Stephen Chau)
6. What could people say that would hurt your
feelings?
(e.g. You’ll never pass your HKCEE exams.)
You
could also ask students to think of new sentences
with these words & phrases.

watching, tell students,
"Naz thinks her boyfriend, John, dresses like
a 'dork'. Find out how Gal Pal helps him look
cool. How would you help John if you were Gal
Pal?"
Some
students may have seen the film already. Don't worry
because they wouldn't have tried the following activities.
Ask
"Did you agree with Gal Pal's advice? Did John look
better?
Could
have class vote on whether the new John looks better
or worse.

Ask students to look at the printout of
the Target Language.

2. Explain that
all these phrases can be used to give advice.
Explain the differences between 1-2, 5-6 and
1&2.
All phrases
are followed by verbs. No. 1 is followed
by the 'ing' form of a verb.

3. Ask two students
to the front of the class. The others must
give them advice on certain situations. They
must use one of the phrases from the printout.
e.g. (i)
Keith woke up late. He might be late for school.
(e.g. Why don't you get a taxi?) (ii)
Susie hasn't finished her homework. (iii)
Keith wants to race motorcycles as a career. (iv) Susie wants
Keith to do her homework. (v)
Keith wants to join the school basketball
team. (vi)
Susie's parents want her to study in Canada
. She doesn't want to go.
Students could think of more situations if
there is time.

Watch the film again without stopping.

2. Put students
into groups of four. Give out the dialogue.
Each person should choose a role (Naz, John,
Gal Pal, David) and say the dialogue. Give
time to prepare.
Students can turn
around to go into groups. Students in odd
numbered groups can play two parts.

3. Students can
swap roles so they say the dialogue two to
three times, depending on time.
They could swap
roles after every scene.

4. Choose four
students to act out the film in front of the
class.
They don't need
to be from the same group.

act out the dialogue (22 min)

Students stay in their groups. They must write
& act out two extra scenes: ‘John
wants to see Naz again. He asks Gal Pal for
help. He must phone Naz and talks to her father.’
The scenes should last no more than one minute
each.
They should include advice phrases.
Students
must think of what each character will say.
(Naz, John, Gal Pal, Naz’s father) Smaller
groups could omit the father character.

perform one of their scenes.

notes.
