Target language - Grading adverbs

Adverbs usually give more information about verbs. They can also be used in front of adjectives and other adverbs. These are called grading adverbs.

Adverbs usually end in 'ly' (e.g. quickly, happily). Some adverbs do not end in 'ly' (e.g. never, soon, once). Be careful. Some adjectives also end in 'ly' (e.g. ugly, friendly).

Grading adverbs reinforce the adjective, making it stronger.

e.g. before adjectives

It's totally perfect. She's incredibly beautiful. The tickets are reasonably cheap.

e.g. before adverbs

I filled in the form very carefully. He talked pretty quickly. Liu Xiang runs incredibly quickly.
