Chi was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Canada. He studied science at university then returned to Hong Kong. Chi intended to get a job in science and started coaching basketball while he was looking for a job.
"I played basketball a lot at university and love the game. I found sharing my passion for the game with kids really rewarding so I decided to make it my career!
I do all my work in English School Foundation schools, mostly after school and on Saturdays. The students are from 5 to 12 years old. They mostly study in international schools but we have some local school kids as well. Playing sport with native speakers is actually a great way to improve your language skills.
When I decided to become a full-time coach, I took some coaching courses. I now have a Level 2 coaching certificate from the Hong Kong Basketball Association. I would advise anyone who wants to be a coach to get qualifications. I also have first |
aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation ¨C helping someone when they stop breathing) qualifications.
I like working outdoors. I'm not stuck in an office with this job. We play in a gym in summer though! It's great to see my students apply what I've taught them and enjoy the game. They learn a lot about working in a team as well. I have to work all day Saturday and in school holidays but I don't mind that. The students keep me fit as well!"
"The leisure industry is growing all the time. There are more old people with time on their hands and parents want their children to be properly taught to play sports. More and more coaches are needed in Hong Kong so it's a good career, especially if you love a particular sport," advises Chi.
