The biggest mystery in Italy is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was built in 1173 as a bell tower. It took 177 years to finish. The tower was built on poor foundations and soon started to lean.
It is 56.70 metres tall and leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees. This means that is 3.9 metres from a vertical position. In 1990, work started to make sure that the tower will not fall over. However, people in Pisa want it to lean because it attracts so many tourists.
Laura visited there once. "This beautiful building was built with poor foundations. That's why it leans," she explained. "It's a mystery why it didn"t fall over in the last 900 years!"
This is what Laura had to say about living in Hong Kong .
" Hong Kong is amazingly efficient. The MTR is great. It's always on time. I get a bus to school which is also fast and frequent. I have to wait for ages for buses to come at home. My school is on Hong Kong Island so I can easily see the harbour. Many people travel on scooters in Rome . They're quick and can be dangerous." |
"I study in Belilios Public School . It's a girls' school. I studied with boys in Italy . It's a bit strange to have only girls but my classmates are really friendly. I have to wear a uniform which I don't need to do in Rome . We usually wear jeans. We can choose a variety of subjects in Italy . I could study science and arts subjects in senior years. There are more opportunities in school here. At Belilios, we have lots more extra-curricular activities at computers than in my school in Rome ."
"I usually hang out with my friends in Rome . We go to a cafe, watch DVDs at friends' homes or go to see a film. That's similar to here. When I meet my friends in Italy we hug or kiss on the cheek, even boys. I don't do that with friends here! I had a lot of fun in Disneyland here. It's easy to get to. Hong Kong is cheaper than Italy for most things."
"I like the food here. We eat a lot of pasta in Italy and noodles are somewhat similar. My host family's grandmother makes us Chinese soup. It's black. I don't know what's in it but still have a few bowls!" |
